Our methodology — traceable end to end.

Stage 1 · Scoping & pre-visit

Every survey begins with a scoping conversation with your retail estates, FM or risk lead. We agree the floor area to be tested, the test point density, contamination assumptions (typical retail surfaces are tested both dry and with the standard wet-water contaminant), and access arrangements.

Floor plans are annotated in advance with proposed test point locations. The scope is confirmed in writing as part of our fixed quote — we do not "scope on the day", which avoids the most common dispute we see in non-accredited surveys.

Stage 2 · On-site testing

Testing is carried out in accordance with BS 7976-2:2002+A1:2013, using a calibrated TRRL-pattern pendulum tester. The test sequence at every point:

• Surface preparation and conditioning per BS 7976-2 Annex A
• Five dry pendulum swings, recorded on the dry-clean surface
• Five wet pendulum swings, with controlled water contaminant
• Surface roughness (Rz) measurement on smooth surfaces using a calibrated stylus profilometer
• Photographic record of test point and surrounding area
• Plan-marked location reference for the report

For barefoot wet areas (e.g. retail-adjacent leisure or spa zones), Slider 55 is used in place of the standard Slider 96.

Stage 3 · UKAS-endorsed reporting

Reports are issued within five working days. Every report includes:

• Executive summary with pass/fail headline against UKSRG 2022 thresholds
• Pendulum Test Value (PTV) results — mean, range, and individual readings
• Surface roughness data where applicable
• Slip risk classifications (Low / Moderate / High)
• Plan-marked test point locations
• Photographic plates of every test point
• Equipment calibration certificate references (traceable to national standards)
• UKAS Lab № 7933 endorsement mark
• Operator signature and competence statement

Stage 4 · Independent recommendations

Where the survey identifies surfaces below the recommended slip resistance threshold, we set out corrective options impartially. We do not sell flooring, anti-slip treatments, etching solutions, mats, coatings or any product.

Typical recommendations cover: changes to cleaning regime; mat placement at entrances; surface re-treatment by independent specialists; replacement of the flooring system; or interim signage and management controls. The choice is yours; the data is independent.

Quality management

Surface Performance Ltd operates an ISO/IEC 17025-compliant quality management system, audited annually by UKAS surveillance assessors. Equipment is traceably calibrated against national standards on a rolling schedule. Personnel competence is documented and reviewed annually. Method validation records are maintained for every test type covered by our schedule.
